10 The Most Popular Dog Names
- Milo
- Daisy
- Lucy
- Charlie
- Luna
- Bella
- Max
- Coco
- Cooper
- Teddy
Luna, Bella, and Charlie are the top three most popular pet names in the country. Luna and Bella had switched places from our 2023 data, with Luna taking the No. 1 spot and Bella as the runner-up. Charlie, who had the fifth most popular name in 2017, has risen to third place.
Max and Daisy make up the rest of the top five, with both falling since last year, Max from third to fourth and Daisy from fourth to fifth.
Looking at the rest of the top 10:
- Lucy has climbed from the eighth spot to sixth.
- Coco has slipped from sixth to seventh.
- Milo, which is back on the list this year, has advanced one notch from its ninth-place ranking last year.
- There are two new names in the top 10: Cooper at No.
Buddy and Bailey, meanwhile, have dropped out of the top 10 entirely, falling from seventh and 10th place, respectively, to 11th and 12th place.
There’s also the possibility that, like Sirius, Luna, and Bella, the enduring status of these names stems from their association with female characters in the Harry Potter series. B’luuna could also reflect the preferences of a multilingual family, as Luna means “moon” and Bella means “beautiful” or “pretty” in both Spanish and Italian.
Meanwhile, Charlie, Max, and Daisy demonstrate that old-fashioned names never go out of style. The 1989 movie All Dogs Go to Heaven also stars a main dog named Charlie, and the same goes for a periodic Looney Tunes character from the 1940s.
Max’s vogue may have been introduced by Disney, which assigned it to the dog belonging to Prince Eric in 1989’s “The Little Mermaid” and to Max Goof, the son of Goofy, in 1992. In a more up-to-date reference, Max is the leading character in The Secret Life of Pets and its sequel.
The charm of Daisy has endured for decades. The name belongs to the puppy that is so crucial to the 2014 film John Wick and can even be traced back to the Blondie film series of the late 1930s and early 1940s
