Famed for their “velcro” personality, these dog-like cats demand human companionship and can suffer from separation anxiety if left alone. They are highly intelligent, vocal, and playful, thriving well with children and other pets. They live up to 18 years but require weight management and screening for genetic muscle weakness.

Burmese Cat Appearance and Physical Traits

The Burmese is a medium-sized, compact, and heavily muscled cat, often described as a “brick wrapped in silk” due to its surprising weight. Key traits include a rounded head, large, expressive golden eyes, and a short, satin-like coat. They are known for their athletic build, broad chest, and affectionate, “dog-like” personality.

Physical Characteristics

  • Body: Medium size, compact and muscular with a rounded chest, and surprisingly heavy for their size.
  • Head: Generally rounded with a short, broad muzzle and a visible nose break when viewed in profile.
  • Eyes: Large, widely set, and luminous, typically in shades of gold or yellow.
  • Ears: Medium-sized, broad at the base, and rounded at the tips, often tilting slightly forward.
  • Coat: Very short, fine, and glossy, with a satin-like texture that lies close to the body.
  • Tail: Medium length, straight, and tapering to the tip.
  • Weight: Generally ranges from 3.5 to 5.5 kg (roughly 8 to 12+ lbs).

Coat Colors

While traditionally sable (dark brown), the CFA recognizes four distinct colors:

  • Sable: A rich, warm brown.
  • Champagne: A warm beige.
  • Blue: A medium gray with fawn undertones.
  • Platinum: A pale, silvery gray.

Variations

There are two main types of Burmese with distinct head shapes:

  • American (Contemporary): More compact, stocky, and round-headed.
  • English (Traditional): More slender with a slightly more wedge-shaped head.

Grooming and Maintenance

Due to their short coat, grooming is minimal and can often be managed with hand-stroking to remove loose hair. They require a high-quality diet to maintain their muscular, lean body and avoid obesity

Burmese Cat Personality and Temperament

Burmese cats are renowned for their highly affectionate, “dog-like” personalities, acting as playful and intelligent companions that crave human company.
