Table of Contents

The Balinese cat is an elegant, medium-sized pedigree breed essentially characterized as a long-haired Siamese with a distinctive, feather-plumed tail. Originating in the United States during the 1950s due to a natural genetic mutation, these felines are highly celebrated for their striking sapphire-blue eyes, svelte muscular builds, and deeply affectionate, extroverted personalities.

In the UAE, a purebred Balinese cat from a reputable breeder or local pet boutique generally costs between AED 3,500 and AED 6,500. Premium or show-quality lineages imported from Europe or America can easily reach AED 8,000+

Physical Characteristics of the Balinese Cat

The Balinese cat is an elegant, medium-sized feline known for its striking likeness to the Siamese but with a luxurious, long, single coat. They feature a slender, tubular body, vivid sapphire-blue eyes, a plumed tail, and a defined color-point pattern.

A deep dive into their specific physical traits includes the following defining characteristics:

  • Head & Face: They have a long, tapering, wedge-shaped head that forms a clean triangle from the nose to the tips of their large, pointed ears. Their profile is straight and continuous.
  • Eyes: Balinese cats have striking, almond-shaped eyes that are an intense, vivid sapphire blue.
  • Coat: Unlike most long-haired breeds, the Balinese has a single coat with no downy undercoat. The fur is silky, fine, and lies close to the body, making it less prone to matting.
  • Colors: They possess classic Siamese “color-points” (darker extremities on the face, ears, legs, and tail) that contrast with a lighter, creamy white body. Officially recognized point colors include seal, chocolate, blue, and lilac.
  • Body Type: They are muscular yet lithe and graceful. They feature fine bones, long legs (hind legs slightly longer than front), and neat, oval paws.
  • Tail: One of their most prominent features is a long, tapering tail adorned with a lush, plume-like fringe of longer hair.
  • Size & Weight: Typically a medium-sized breed, they generally weigh between 3kg to 5kg, with males occasionally reaching up to 5kg

Personality and Temperament

While often used interchangeably, temperament and personality are distinct psychological concepts. Temperament is your innate, biological foundation, the “raw” emotional wiring you are born with. Personality is the broader, more complex configuration of traits, thoughts, beliefs, and behaviors built on top of that foundation through life experiences.

A simple way to understand the difference is that temperament is rigid and genetic, whereas personality is adaptable and shaped over time by your environment, culture, and learning.

The 4 Primary Temperaments

Historically rooted in ancient medicine, these four basic styles describe how you instinctively react to the world:

  • Sanguine: Social, optimistic, outgoing, and warm. They thrive in social settings but can sometimes struggle with focus.
  • Choleric: Goal-oriented, ambitious, assertive, and decisive. They make natural leaders, but can sometimes be seen as aggressive or impatient.
  • Melancholic: Analytical, detail-oriented, deep-thinking, and introverted. They are highly organized and creative, but prone to overthinking and perfectionism.
  • Phlegmatic: Relaxed, peaceful, steady, and accommodating. They are excellent mediators and stress-handlers, but sometimes lack motivation or assertiveness.

Balinese Cat Care Guide

Balinese cats are intelligent, highly affectionate, and vocal companions that require plenty of interactive play and mental stimulation. Because they lack a downy undercoat, their silky, medium-length fur is relatively low-maintenance, but they need active daily engagement to prevent boredom and loneliness.

Diet & Feeding

  • Portion Control: Balinese have healthy appetites and can become overweight if overfed. Weigh out high-quality food to maintain a slender build.
  • Life Stages: Consult your vet for specific portion amounts based on age, or use a healthy-weight formula if they are inactive.
  • Hydration: Encourage drinking by providing fresh water or a flowing Cat Water Fountain.

Grooming

  • Brushing: Since they only have a single coat, brushing 1 to 2 times a week is generally enough to remove loose hair and control shedding.
  • Teeth Cleaning: Balinese are prone to dental issues; establish a routine of brushing their teeth 3 times a week with pet-safe enzymatic toothpaste.
  • General Maintenance: Gently wipe their eyes with a damp cloth to remove any secretions, check their ears for debris weekly, and trim their nails every 3-4 weeks.

Environment & Play

  • Enrichment: These cats are incredibly agile and clever. Keep them occupied with puzzle toys, clicker training, and fetch games.
  • Vertical Space: They love to survey their kingdom. Install sturdy cat shelves or a tall Cat Tree to satisfy their climbing instincts.
  • Company: They are “chatterboxes” that crave constant attention. If you work long hours, consider adopting a pair or providing them with dog-friendly companions.

Health & Vet Care

  • Routine Exams: Schedule annual health checks with your veterinarian for routine vaccinations and parasite control.
  • Genetic Screenings: Balinese can occasionally be predisposed to feline acromelanism, bladder stones, or bronchial disease. Discuss genetic screening with your breeder to assess risk factors.
  • Insurance: Given potential hereditary concerns, it is highly recommended to look into Pet Insurance to help cover future medical tests and procedures

Balinese Cat vs Siamese Cat Comparison

The main difference between a Balinese cat and a Siamese cat is the length of their coat. The Balinese is essentially a long-haired version of the Siamese, sharing the same vocal personality, athletic build, and pointed color patterns.
